It was a day to steal away some fun before the last of summer got away. After all of the unpacking, tending to some house projects and hosting visitors in our new home over the last few months, last Sunday was a lazy day for us. T~ and I went to Kings Island.
The summer afternoon was made to explore the park, which was my first time visiting. Sunshine, bluest of blue skies and puffy white clouds greeted us as we crossed the gate. Hand in hand we meandered through the park. We road a couple of the coasters, took in views from the tower and shared a funnel cake. Then before heading out, we ended our visit on the tall swing ride as the sun was starting to set. It was beautiful. My heart felt full and my soul at peace.
T~ and I stopped at a friend's house on the way home and visited for a bit. As we left for the evening, it was the first of the cool nights to lick at our heels as we hopped into the car.
It was good sleeping weather. A heavy sleep under the weight of the blankets long forgotten from the summer's heat was woken by the cool of the next day's morning.
It is not a matter of "can't" or "too hard," but if you are willing to do what it takes.

Summer Visitors
While this summer has been spent unpacking the house, we have also hosted friends and family when they have come to visit. It has been nice to have people over at our house. Quality time with those we care about is important.
I was a little nervous when one of my best friends came to visit with her three kids, who are also my godchildren. They are six, five and three. I wanted them to have fun and enjoy themselves. And I hoped that I would have enough to keep them busy! I'm not a mom, so I was a little worried. Could I hack it for a weekend? Of course my friend was coming and it was not like I'd have them all on my own, but I wanted to do a good job.
Fortunately, our new house is right down the street from a fun little park and splash pad. I was just hoping for good weather. There is also an ice cream shop down the other way. So, that was good for a walk and a treat. Then I looked online for touristy kinds of things and there is a nice children's museum in town. Plus, if we had good weather, there are nature parks with hiking trails that the kids could handle, as I've seen other families there in the past.
I had an outline of big ideas, but wanted to think about the time between, too. Kids have a lot of energy and if they do not have something to do, they will find something. So, T~ and I went shopping for toys. He has young nephews around the same age. We figured buying some toys would be a good investment. We picked out some things for inside and outside play. I tried to get some things that can be gender neutral and a few things that may be a little more gender specific. For example, Legos are great for many kids and for a good range of ages. Lots of kids like to play with kitchen sets, color, use play-doh and play with outdoor toys, like hula hoops and a kickball. But, I also got some superhero action figures with a couple of small vehicles and a princess doll set with a small fold up castle. I tried to stay within a budget and not get too crazy. Another thing we had going for us is that my husband has a good collection of Pixar movies and we have Netflix. Not that we want to rely on TV, but it was likely to rain.
In addition, I worried about what the kids would want to eat. I checked in with my friend and then went grocery shopping. Again, I didn't want to go crazy, but at least have a few options. I just really wanted my friend and her children to feel welcomed. I thought about the times my brother and I would visit family as little kids and tried to pull from those experiences as to what made us feel comfortable and welcomed in someone's home. A little bit can go a long way.
Finally, I was concerned about whether or not I'd have the energy to keep going the whole weekend. I'm pretty used to a quiet house and that is very different than three small children. I hoped I would not feel overwhelmed.
However, the weekend visit went very well! The kids played nicely and had a lot of fun. I got to enjoy quality time with my friend. And I hoped she felt like she may have gotten somewhat of a break with the trip. Her husband has been very busy with work and as a stay-at-home mom, she does a lot of the caregiving.
The kids loved the park and splash pad. We went to the park the first night after dinner. They had a lot of fun going on the swings and teeter totter and climbing equipment. The next morning we went to the splash pad before it had a chance to rain. The day before was better weather for it, but the kids still enjoyed it. They were very silly running around, slashing and filling a bucket of water. Just good old water play and exploring.
We also went to a small, free farm at one of the Metro parks. It ended up being smaller than we thought and it was self-guided. With the possibility of rain, we were the only ones there. I thought it was kind of a bust, but it turns out that the kids got a kick out of it. They talked quite a bit about it the next morning.
They had a blast at the kid's museum, which I'm very glad that T~ came along so that each child could be paired with a grown-up. This gave each child the ability to explore and spend as much time as they liked in the different areas. It flowed well and we generally stayed together, but one or two may have lingered before moving onto the next thing or maybe skipped something that was not as interesting from time to time. We spent quite a bit of time at the museum. It was fun to play along with them, too.
The kids were very cute. My friend said they could not wait to come and visit. She said they were so excited to come to our house. I've been to their house lots of times, but I think this was a fun adventure for them. Snuggles and hugs and happy memories made. I hope my friend comes to visit again, and we'd welcome the kids, too. It was a successful, fun weekend!

Settling In
It has been about two weeks since we moved into our new house. It is already starting to feel like home.
When we first moved our stuff into the house, we then left for Cleveland for my cousin's wedding. So, we didn't stay in it until after we came back from the trip. T~ walked me across the threshold. Newlywed fun, and a great way to celebrate just over six months of marriage!
I kept fairly mum about the house as I was worried something may not work out. We actually put an offer on another house in February, but we missed it by an hour. There was a contingency offer on that house and the other family sold their house just before we submitted our offer. It was disappointing. However, it all worked out because we really like this house more. The other house was very nice and an easy practical choice, but it was one of four houses we looked at when really starting to look since toeing the waters in the fall. It almost seemed too good to be true.
Our closing was in the beginning of May. You can see a picture here. It took us about six weeks to move into the house because we needed to get some electrical updates. While the kitchen and bathrooms has been updated, the rest of the house only had two pronged outlets. We needed to do a little bit of updating to be able to plug in our TV and computer. Plus, there was no previous washer and dryer, or even electrical outlets for them. We believe the prior owner who lived in the house may have used a hand crank washer or went to the laundromat. Plus, I wanted better lightning for the basement stairs and a light/fan combo for the main bathroom. Not flashy upgrades, but we are excited about them!
However, with the delay in our move, it gave us time to take advantage of some nice sales. We bought a new washer and dryer. It is crazy the amount of technology has changed washers and dryers since the last time I went shopping for them. Leaps and bounds! Whenever I turn them on, I feel like I am in the future. We also bought a new couch and got a really good deal on it. Unfortunately, the old couch does not fit in the basement, so we will have to sell it. Then, we got some awesome super sales on two rugs. One is for our bedroom and one is for the guestroom. We have hardwood floors throughout, which we really like.
Still plenty of packing, but it is coming together slowly. We are happy to be in our new home!

Summer Highlights
Much has happened this summer and it will continue to be busy until things settle down in the fall. Here are some highlights:
That kind of wraps things up. A sprinkling of things to remember the summer before it becomes a blur. Cannot wait for T~ to come home!
- New job is going well. The work I do makes me happy and I like the people.
- T~ got a job offer and will be joining me next week!
- Temporary housing has been tough and a blessing. There was a lot to finangle before my move to get things set up for my new job and finding a place to live. I also had to rush to do some pre-packing before hitting the road. Although, my tetrising skills came in handy with fitting most of what I needed for two months in my car. The rest was brought with strategic flights with checked baggage. My wedding dress came with me in one of my bags for carry on luggage! I had thoughts of Ben Stiller trying to hug his bag and not gate check it like in the movie, Meet the Patents. I also do not like feeling unsettled with so much up in the air. But, I am rolling with it and floating along. However, living in temporary housing gives me pause from moving to focus on my new job without having to settle into a new home. Cooking and cleaning are a minimum with a small space. The commute is short. It was planned and I just keep telling myself it will all fall into place.
- T~ and I planned two trips to see each other while being apart during the transition. He came to visit me for a long weekend. We went to a gaming convention for a day and spent time by the pool. I went back to Florida for a weekend and got to go with him to his farewell party hosted by his co-workers. It is easy to take for granted the time apart as another thing on a checklist and chalk it up to it will all be alright. But, spending time together is so important, to feel each other's touch and hear each other laugh and to talk. Intimacy is a delicate thing to nurture.
- With me being in Ohio and T~ being in Florida, I have taken advantage of visiting with my family and friends. I am grateful to have this time with them and just hang out. There is no rush of holidays or the feeling of trying to cram it all into one visit. We cooked out on the grill, ate outside and made smores. Went to Cleveland to go to the flea market, the Westside Market and some local restaurants. Flipped through some family photos and sorting through things from my childhood. To just be is wonderful.
- Got to see my brother on my original drive up to Ohio. He lives in North Carolina, so it was a good stopping point. Glad to spend some time with him and hope I can plan another trip soon. The weather will be great for biking.
- Wedding stuff is plugging along. Invitations got lost in the mail. Have to now pick them up from my parents' house. T~ picked out his tuxedo and for the groomsmen. Bridesmaids are nearly done getting their dresses. My sister fell off her bike, broke her collarbone and had surgery. So, that put a delay in shopping. But, more importantly she is doing better and will have full movement in her arm. Rings should be ready soon. T~ is hoping to take them with him before he leaves Orlando.
- T~ and I will camp out in our new apartment until the rest of our stuff arrives. Yay for making deals with it being the off season for moving!
That kind of wraps things up. A sprinkling of things to remember the summer before it becomes a blur. Cannot wait for T~ to come home!

Seashells and Sunshine
Sometimes things seem so perfectly timed, but were unplanned to begin with. I love when spontaneity makes life feel magical and alive.
Last weekend, a college friend of mine invited T~ and I to join her, her husband and their child at the beach. They were staying at her dad's beach house for a couple of weeks on a private island along the Gulf of Mexico. Within a few hours we made the plans and the next day T~ and I drove out to the coast.
It was a lovely weekend and exactly what I needed at just the right time--time with an old friend, a weekend away from home, time at the beach, sharing my friends with T~ and spending time in good company. It was just the right amount of time spent with good people, nature and taking it easy with no real plans. I felt relaxed, rejuvenated and free--things I haven't felt in a long time. And I loved sharing my friends with T~.
One thing that I enjoyed about the weekend was just being lovey with T~. We had an opportunity or two to go walking on the beach just the two of us. We had some meaningful conversations. I shared with T~ that I am tired of waiting to live my life and that I don't want to put things on hold until the rest of life catches up to be just so. We talked about us and our future and hoped next steps while collecting shells and walking along the surf. I felt beautiful, content and happy.

Mountian Lions, Tigers and Bears
Well, maybe not Tigers, unless you count that T~ is from Michigan near Detroit and kind of follows them with baseball.
Sometimes there are moments that are intimate and to be shared between two people and those two people alone. Other times there are moments of clarity that point to something more important, something validating and too fantastic not to share. And I do not want to forget this moment.
When I went to visit California in June, I asked T~ if he would like to join me. He was excited about the opportunity to adventure with me to the west coast to northern California. It was a fantastic trip with visiting family and friends, enjoying the peace of the pristine wilderness and getting to visit the Redwoods.
One evening, I wanted to go and look at the stars away from the campground along the lake. It would really be a great place to see the vast sky without the noise of light or tops of trees. My aunts warned it was not the best idea to venture away from the campground at night at this time of year because there were not enough campers with their noise to chase away the bear and mountain lions. But, it was just too tempting not to try to take a little stroll.
As T~ and I were walking and talking along the road down to the marina, we heard a rustling sound in the dark brush along the side of the path. We both stopped, looked at each other and confirmed that we both heard the same noise. I cannot remember who suggested that we should leave, but we were in agreement and quickly pivoted in the other direction. It was a blur, gut reaction kind of moment where we grabbed each other and ran like mad together.
My first thoughts were run, run, run...fast, fast, fast.
Then I thought, oh, hope this is not the way I am going to die. I do not want to be that person who was warned not to go into the woods at night with the woodland animals with their sharp teeth and sharp claws. I just wanted to look at the stars!
Then as we were still clinging to each other and clumsily running, my heart wanted to melt and I fell in love with T~ all over again. In a moment of perceived danger, his first instinct was to grab me and run, and mine was to grab him and run. It was selfless and wonderful and I couldn't help but smile, even if there was the possibility that it would be the end.
At that point T~ and I started to slow and broke the space between us as we continued to jog while holding hands. We looked back down the road and when we didn't see anything, we slowed again to a fast walk as we approached the campground. We laughed and hugged and were glad that we made it back safely.
I told T~ I was so touched by his actions and how he handled the situation. I didn't feel silly for being afraid that it could have been something more lurking the dark. I commented that if it had been a bear, it probably would have been faster. And if it had been a mountain lion, we probably would not have even heard it coming. He joked that he was afraid that since I am a more experienced runner that if he had not held onto me that I would have out paced him and he would have been eaten by the wild animal. But in seriousness, he wanted me to be safe, for us to be safe. It meant a lot to me.

Reclaiming Summer
It has been HOT! We have had a spell of temperatures in the nineties and I could not be enjoying it more. Call me crazy, but I have been enjoying feeling the heat of the summer. I have not felt more alive in a long time!
To give some insight into my thought process, I should take you back to my summer experiences growing up. When I was a child, I grew up in a town on the west side of Cleveland. It was on Lake Erie, so summers were hot and humid. Granted, it is not as humid as many places in the South where you can feel like you are swimming in the air, but there is a certain amount of humidity that comes with living along one of the Great Lakes. It can easily get into the eighties and nineties in the Cleveland area during the summer. I say this because I've had many people express surprise in this who have not been to the northern part of Ohio.
Any who, I grew up without air conditioning and surprisingly survived with fans! My family did not install air conditioning until after I had finished college and I had moved out. Upon getting married, my ex loved air conditioning and would crank it up during the summer. I also lived in Hotlanta for four years and everywhere I went was blasting with cool air--so much so, that I wore more pants and carried sweatshirts with me everywhere because I would be freezing. It actually made me more uncomfortable going from the extreme heat to extreme, unnaturally cool air inside the buildings. Sorry, but I'd rather deal with one steady temperature instead of the influx and the absurdity of packing layers--in the summer. It just feels wrong to me.
So, this year I have been trying not to turn on my air conditioning in my apartment. I was more motivated in trying to save some money, but as the days passed I realized I liked having the air conditioning off. I love having the windows open and breathing fresh air. I love the feel of a summer breeze and the sounds of the birds in the tree by my balcony. It makes me feel so much more alive and connected to the world. I realize how quiet and isolating closing up your home can be when using the air conditioning. By closing everything up, I miss hearing the soft sounds of life, the smells of flowers or barbecues, and the certainty that what you feel and see are in sync with each other. And as odd as this may sound, I missed feeling the hot summer sweat--not the kind that makes me feel completely uncomfortable and slimy gross--the kind that is lightly sticky, but reminds me of the warmth that it is truly summer.
I haven't experienced summer my way, the way that I had for most of my life in a really long time. And it is completely awesome to be able to to return to living and experiencing summer my way. Swimming in the cool of the pool is that much more satisfying. Watermelon dripping off my chin tastes that much more sweet. And going for a walk on a warm summer night with my man is that much more intoxicating. I love, LOVE summer!
